Eivissa Antiga is a photo-archaeological effort to recreate and keep in collective memory the image of old Ibiza.

Sparsely populated, it is Ibiza of peasants, farming the land to survive, of fishermen, dock workers, salt miners, odd job laborers; of narrow bumpy dirt country roads, dusty in summer and impassable in rainy winter, of dense shadowy pine forests, quiet sandy beaches; of sleepy villages overlooked by centuries-old asymmetric churches lit by moonbeam, of stout whitewashed houses daydreaming under the carob trees, of small local organic food and artisan markets, deep-rooted wholehearted noisily ebullient fiestas; an island of creative solitude for incoming artists, a tranquil rural escape for other reclusive types.

What remains of it today is mostly inland, miraculously out of reach for the package tours, beyond the crammed high-rise hotels and the extravagant club scene. Here, life continues in character and at a pace of the ancestors. The hills are green. The soil is red. The sky is blue. Valleys are chilled by the whispering breeze. Air is perfumed with the scent of ripening fruits. People gather to dance, sing and cook locally sourced produce giving their meals an extra traditional slant with a bottle of hierbas on the table. It keeps old Ibiza perpetually young, a profoundly natural, sensual and communal experience.
